Currency
The Chinese currency is called “Yuan(¥)” or “Renminbi”(RMB). At the current exchange rate, 1 euro is approximately equal to 9.20 Yuan while 1 US dollar is is approximately equal to 6.83 Yuan. Money can be changed in the airport on arrival. Ensure you get at least ¥100 worthy of ¥10 notes as taxi drivers often claim not to have change. If you exchange traveler’s cheques, it is useful to keep a record of transactions. Credit cards are accepted in the larger hotels, restaurants, and the stores. Keep receipts of money exchange from banks and hotel, you will need it if you want to change money back. Cash can be withdrawn at most local ATMs. Bank of China is generally the most reliable, but remember that money withdrawn from ATM cannot be exchanged back into other currencies.
Electricity & Adaptor
The electrical voltage in China is 220V. Most hotels provide 110V outlets for electric razors.
Transport Action
Shanghai now has two airports. Hongqiao Airport is located about 15 kilometers from the centre of town, mainly for domestic flights. All international flights arrive and depart from the new Pudong International Airport which is located about 60 kilometers out of town in the Pudong New Area.
Taxis are probably the easiest way to get around. You can just pick one at the entrance of your hotel or in the street even late at night. Although some taxi drivers may speak a little English, it will be very helpful to have your destination written down in Chinese. Cards carrying hotel information are available in every hotel lobby. All taxis are metered and the drivers largely trustworthy and professional (in attitude if not in driving ability). It is a good idea to have small change on hand to pay the fare. The flag fare is 11Yuan for the first 2.5 kilometers and then after is 2Yuan for each additional kilometer. The flag fare after 11pm is 13Yuan. The metro underground rail system is cheaper and efficient, although best avoided during peak hours
Buses charge a flat fare of 2Yuan. But taking buses can be difficult without knowledge of the language.
